Troubleshooting

The usual suspects, and what to do about them.

macOS says it can’t check Dynotch

Dynotch isn’t notarized. Click Done, then Open Anyway under Security in System Settings›Privacy & Security. See Install.

No notification peeks

Go through these in order:

  1. The switch. Notifications has to be on in Settings›Live Activities. With it off, the section the next two steps need is hidden.
  2. Full Disk Access. Settings›Live Activities›Notifications says Needs Full Disk Access when it’s missing. Turn it on in System Settings, and reopen Dynotch if macOS asks.
  3. The app. Check it’s picked under Show notifications from.
  4. A Focus. Peeks stay hidden while any Focus is on.
  5. A mirrored display. Peeks stay hidden while a display is mirrored.
  6. Notification Center. The app’s Show in Notification Center has to stay on, because that’s where Dynotch reads them from.

Peeks also come a few seconds after the system banner. Here’s why.

The system banner still shows

Dynotch only reads notifications, so macOS keeps showing its own banner. To see only the peek, set the app’s alert style to None. See Showing only the peek.

Nothing shows for Focus

macOS only tells apps whether a Focus is on, so Dynotch reads which one from the Focus settings, which takes Full Disk Access. Without it, nothing shows.

The notch shows the wrong Focus

Settings›About›Diagnostics saves a report of what the Focus settings hold. It keeps their shape, identifiers and times, and leaves names and places out, so it can be shared. Open an issue and attach it.

The player doesn’t show what’s playing

The player follows Apple Music and Spotify only. Here’s why. If it’s one of those two, check that Dynotch is allowed to control it in System Settings›Privacy & Security›Automation.

No brightness slider

The slider reaches the built-in display through a private framework. If that’s unavailable, the slider isn’t shown. It doesn’t work on external displays.

Keys still show the system HUD

Replace system HUD needs Accessibility, and Volume & brightness on. Keys Dynotch can’t handle, like an output without a volume control or an external display, go to macOS as usual.

Install and Relaunch isn’t offered

A copy that can’t replace itself, like one run straight from the disk image, offers Download instead. Put Dynotch in Applications first.

Launch at login doesn’t stick

Move Dynotch to Applications before turning it on. If the switch stays off, allow Dynotch in System Settings›General›Login Items.

Esc doesn’t reach the app you’re in

While the notch is open or showing a glance, Esc closes it instead of reaching the app in front. Press it again, and the app gets it.

Permissions disappeared after a rebuild

That happens with an ad hoc build, which looks like a new app to macOS. Sign with the local identity. See Build from source.

Reporting a bug

Open an issue with what you expected, what happened, your macOS version and Mac model. For anything security-related, see the security policy and please don’t open a public issue.
